My 17-year-old daughter, Gracie Turner, is in New York this week and next attending iTheatrics' Broadway Academy. She is among a select few young thespians chosen to participate, and she received a scholarship to be there. I am very proud of her.
Gracie earned her place in the Broadway Academy for the second year in a row after participating in the annual iTheatrics Junior Theatre Festival, sponsored by Music Theater International (MTI), in Atlanta as one of the All Stars from the Asheville Performing Arts Academy that she has attended for several years. iTheatrics chooses two actors to attend the Broadway Academy from each theatre group that travels from across the country to participate in the Junior Theatre Festival.
"It's basically a two week workshop at iTheatrics where we put on a show, in this case Our House, where we see what works, what doesn't, how to adapt it so schools can do it, and in this case to see if MTI, which leases out a ton of musical scripts, will produce it," says Gracie. "Our House is a British play, and this is the first time it will be performed in the US."
She is part of an ensemble of very talented young performers from across the US.
From the iTheatrics website about what Gracie is doing in NY:
Our Broadway Academy offers you the chance to perform a brand new adaptation of a musical in a workshop setting. You’ll be performing with kids from all over who love musicals as much as you do. Because we are performing musicals that are actively being developed, we focus on storytelling not production value. Our shows are performed script-in-hand and rehearsals are fast paced and intense. You’re going to learn a lot about being in a professional musical, and you’re going to learn it very quickly!-Dave Turner
Some of the most accomplished creators of Broadway musicals attend our workshop performances. People like Stephen Schwartz, Sheldon Harnick, Jeannine Tessori, Dick Scanlin, Paul Williams, Thomas Schumacher and the folks from Disney Theatrical Productions, Freddie Gershon and the folks from Music Theatre International and many, many others.
Our performers are occasionally recruited for Broadway shows. In fact, our students have performed in Broadway shows like: "Spring Awakening," "Next To Normal," "Mama Mia," "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," "Mary Poppins," and "Billy Elliot."
While performing in a Broadway show is exciting, we think it’s even cooler when one of our students is accepted to their college of choice! Our students have been accepted to Yale, Julliard, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, NYU, University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon, Boston Conservatory and many others.
